Grand Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. Beginning with the installation of La Grande Vitesse, the city has been host to an annual festival of the arts downtown, known to locals simply as Festival. During the first weekend in June, several blocks of downtown surrounding the Calder stabile next to City Hall are closed to traffic. Festival features several stages with free live performances, food booths selling a variety of ethnic cuisine, art demonstrations and sales, and other arts-related activities. Organizers bill it as the largest all-volunteer arts festival in the United States. Also in Vandenberg Plaza are various country-specific ethnic festivals that occur throughout the summer season. RESIDENTIAL YARD WASTE COLLECTION IN THE CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS
The City of Grand Rapids will begin residential curbside yard waste collections on Monday, April 6, 2009. City Yard Waste Tags are $1.50 each, City Yard Waste Paper Bags are $7.50 for a package of five, and Yard Waste Cart Tags are $5.25 each. Yard waste is collected on the same day as refuse collection for your area. All yard waste must be placed at your refuse collection point by 7:00 a.m.
The City’s free drop-off site for residential yard waste will reopen on Monday, March 23, 2009. City residents may drop-off leaves, brush, and tree branches at 2001 Butterworth SW Monday through Saturday during the hours of 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Residents will need to show a valid ID proving residency in the City of Grand Rapids. Contractors and non-residents will be turned away. Just a reminder that this site cannot be used for the disposal of construction material, trash, or any other non-yard waste items. The use of plastic bags for the disposal of leaves (or any other yard waste) is prohibited. Residents bringing yard waste in plastic bags to the drop-off site will be asked to empty the material out of the bags and take the bags with them for proper disposal off-site.
We would also like to remind City residents that the sweeping of leaves (or any other material) into the street or gutter is not allowed. Material swept into the street may clog catch basins causing street flooding.

The City of Grand Rapids Encourages Citizen Input On City Services and Budget
Grand Rapids, MI - The City of Grand Rapids encourages residents, representatives of community organizations, and business and property owners to tell City Commissioners what services are important to them during Community Budget Gatherings scheduled in March. These gatherings will provide opportunity for citizens to better understand the City’s current and projected fiscal condition and to help in the prioritization of services.
Interim City Manager Eric DeLong is challenged to produce a balanced budget in these difficult economic times. He says, “Members of the City Commission and I want to have face-to-face conversations with our citizens to understand what services they need most to have a high quality of life in Grand Rapids. This will be critical in navigating our nearterm and mid-term financial difficulties.”
Community Budget Gatherings will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. on the following dates: March 4, 2009 – City High School (1400 Fuller, NE) March 9, 2009 – Union High School (1800 Tremont Blvd, NW) March 12, 2009 – Ottawa Hills High School (2055 Rosewood, SE)
